CMP Maintenance & Content Areas
Interpreters and transliterators can earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in two content categories: Professional Studies (PS) and General Studies (GS).
Certification Maintenance Requirements
- 8.0 CEUs are required during each Certification Maintenance Cycle.
- At least 6.0 CEUs must be in Professional Studies.
- At least 1.0 CEU of Professional Studies must be in Power, Privilege & Oppression (PPO).
- General Studies are optional. Up to 2.0 General Studies CEUs may be counted toward the 8.0 CEUs required for certification maintenance. An interpreter may earn all 8.0 required CEUs through Professional Studies.
Professional Studies
Professional Studies contain content that directly applies to or affects the field of interpreting and transliterating. These studies deepen an interpreter’s knowledge, skills, and ability to provide excellence through their work, regardless of the interpreting setting.
A minimum of 6.0 CEUs must be completed in Professional Studies during each Certification Maintenance Cycle. Professional Studies include the following areas:
Language, Culture & Human Behavior
Advanced studies of language, culture, and human behavior may include:
- Language and linguistics: ASL structure; phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics; language variation and change; sociolinguistics; language and power; language and cognition; and advanced language development.
- Advanced language studies: specialized vocabulary, grammar development, and analysis of linguistic register in ASL, English, and other languages.
- Languaculture and cultural studies: the relationship between language mechanics, language use, and the cultural components that inform communication, including history and traditions.
- Intracultural dynamics: communication studies, interpersonal communication, group dynamics, and language as power.
- Cultural studies: Deaf culture, American culture, religious studies, and other relevant cultural topics.
- Intercultural dynamics: power, privilege, bias, social justice, cross-cultural studies, minority group dynamics, and language domination, suppression, and elevation.
Theoretical & Experiential Studies
Studies that examine the process of interpreting and transliterating through the application of principles, philosophy, ideas, or concepts may include:
- History and issues in interpretation and transliteration.
- Theory of interpretation and transliteration.
- Skills development in interpretation and transliteration.
- Skills development in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.
- Professional ethics.
Specialization Studies
Specialization Studies focus on areas in which interpreters develop more specialized knowledge, skills, vocabulary, and systems knowledge for particular settings or populations.
Examples include:
- Educational settings, including K–12 and post-secondary education.
- Rehabilitation settings.
- Legal settings, including courtroom protocol and mediation law.
- Medical and mental health settings, including medical terminology and anatomy and physiology in ASL and English.
- Substance abuse recovery programs.
- Technical areas.
- Ethics as applied in specialized settings.
Documentation requirement: Documentation must detail how the activity relates to the development of interpreting skills in the particular field or setting.
Power, Privilege & Oppression (PPO)
At least 1.0 CEU of Professional Studies must be earned in the Power, Privilege & Oppression (PPO) content area.
PPO programming addresses systems of power, privilege, and oppression and provides opportunities for participants to examine how they affect and are affected by these systems. PPO programming should move beyond sharing lived experiences and incorporate reflection, learning, and application.
General Studies
General Studies include topics that enhance an interpreter’s base of general or world knowledge. The activity must still be a legitimate educational program with clearly defined educational goals and measurable objectives.
There is no minimum requirement for General Studies. Interpreters may apply up to 2.0 General Studies CEUs toward the 8.0 CEUs required for certification maintenance. Interpreters may instead earn all 8.0 required CEUs through Professional Studies.

Offering Continuing Education
Host a Workshop for CEUs
Are you or your organization interested in offering a workshop for RID CEUs? Complete the Continuing Education Activity Plan and submit the required information for review and approval.
PINRA (Participant Initiated Non-RID Activity)
PINRA processing is currently delayed. Please plan for additional processing time to receive approval or consider selecting an alternate RID CMP Sponsor.
A Participant Initiated Non-RID Activity (PINRA) allows an interpreter or transliterator to request RID CEUs for an educational activity that is not offered by an RID-approved Sponsor. The activity must be sponsored by an organization with standards specific to its area of expertise, a defined format, and clearly identified educational objectives.
RID policy requirement: PINRA activities must offer continuing education credits or units approved by another recognized professional organization or organizing body.
PINRAs may include activities such as auditing a college course, attending a non-credit course, participating in professional association training, attending a school district in-service, or attending an organization’s convention or workshop.
Important: You must receive approval from an RID-approved Sponsor before the activity begins. PINRAs should not be used for sponsor-initiated activities or group activities.
Before You Submit
Gather information about the conference, workshop, seminar, course, or other educational activity you want to attend. If the connection to interpreting or transliterating is not clear, be prepared to explain how attending the activity will improve your interpreting work.
Review RID’s PINRA Guidelines →
Steps to Complete a PINRA
- Gather information about the activity. Collect the event description, agenda, learning objectives, flyers, brochures, registration information, or other documentation that describes the educational activity.
- Contact UTRID before the activity begins. Submit your PINRA request at least 45 days before the activity whenever possible. Do not wait until the day before an activity to request approval; sponsor processing and review require time.
- Determine whether a processing fee applies. UTRID members receive 3 PINRA processing submissions per membership year as a membership benefit. Additional submissions are subject to the applicable processing fee. See CMP Processing Fees for details.
- Work with UTRID to determine the RID CEU details. UTRID will review the activity with you to determine whether it is eligible for RID CEUs, whether the activity qualifies as Professional Studies or General Studies, how many RID CEUs may be awarded, and what documentation will be required to verify participation.
- Attend the activity and collect documentation. Complete the approved activity and retain the required proof of attendance or participation.
- Submit your completion documentation. Complete the required PINRA Completion Form within 10 days of the activity and provide the requested attendance or participation verification.
Complete information helps prevent delays.
Submit all required information and supporting documentation with your request whenever possible. Missing information may delay review or processing.
Independent Study Plan
Independent Study activities may include research, curriculum development or enhancement projects, study groups, developing effective mentoring strategies or evaluation rubrics, and preparing scientific or clinical materials for publication.
Important: If you are using UTRID as your CMP Sponsor, you must follow UTRID’s requirements and receive approval before beginning your Independent Study. Failure to follow these requirements may prevent you from receiving RID CEUs.
Steps to Complete an Independent Study
- Contact a CMP Sponsor. Discuss your proposed Independent Study and receive approval for the plan before beginning the activity.
- Complete payment if required. UTRID members receive one Independent Study submission per membership year as a membership benefit. Additional submissions are $10 each. Only purchase this service if you have exhausted your annual membership benefit. View Independent Study payment.
- Complete the Independent Study form. Submit your proposed plan through the Independent Study form. Include supporting materials such as an activity description, lesson plan, agenda, learning objectives, flyers, brochures, or other documentation that explains the proposed study.
- Work with the CMP Sponsor to determine the RID CEU details. The sponsor will determine the number and type of RID CEUs and how participation will be verified.
- Maximum credit: A maximum of 2.0 RID CEUs may be earned for each Independent Study project.
- Project scope: The applicant is responsible for outlining the work and study included in the plan and the amount of time expected to complete it.
- Typical time commitment: An Independent Study earning 2.0 RID CEUs typically requires approximately 40–60 hours of work.
- Larger projects: Larger projects may be divided into separate components, with each component submitted as a separate Independent Study project and eligible for up to 2.0 RID CEUs.
- CEU type: The sponsor will determine whether the activity qualifies for Professional Studies or General Studies credit.
- Complete the Independent Study as approved. Follow the approved plan and maintain the verification materials agreed upon with the CMP Sponsor.
- Submit completion documentation. Submit your attendance or participation verification materials to the CMP Coordinator within 10 days of completing the Independent Study.
How Independent Study credit is determined: Independent Study activities are weighted based on the scope of the project and the amount of learning and work involved. The learning process is more self-directed than a traditional educational activity, so RID CEUs are not calculated as a simple one-to-one ratio of hours to credit.
Paper forms: Paper forms are provided for reference only. If you use a paper form to gather information, you must transfer the information to the appropriate online form. Do not submit scanned or handwritten forms. Digital submission helps expedite processing and avoids delays caused by having to resubmit the information.
Academic Coursework
Academic Coursework may qualify for RID CMP credit when completed at an accredited institution during the participant’s current certification cycle.
Important: Academic Coursework is the only RID CMP activity that does not require prior approval from a CMP Sponsor. If you are using UTRID as your CMP Sponsor, you are responsible for following UTRID’s submission requirements. Failure to follow these requirements may prevent you from receiving RID CEUs.
Steps to Receive RID CEUs
- Review RID’s requirements. Review the current RID instructions for completing the Academic Coursework form. View the RID Instructions for Academic Coursework.
- Complete payment if required. UTRID members receive one Academic Coursework submission per membership year as a membership benefit. Additional submissions are $10 each. Only purchase this service if you have exhausted your annual membership benefit. View Academic Coursework payment.
